Human Rights Law Centre 20 year Anniversary

This year, the Human Rights Law Centre celebrates 20 years of taking fearless action for a fairer future. Since 2006, we have advanced human rights for millions of people across Australia:

  • decriminalising abortion across Australia;
  • securing marriage equality for LGBTIQA+ people in Australia;
  • helped to overturn indefinite immigration detention;
  • diverting Aboriginal children away from the criminal legal system and challenged their detention in adult prisons;
  • winning successful constitutional cases to protect protest and voting rights; and
  • bringing over 500 people to freedom and safety from offshore detention camps.

Our impact and this milestone is only made possible through your generous support and partnership. We are aiming to raise $2 million by December 2027 for our Human Rights Forward Fund to establish the Centre for 20 even stronger years of fearless, independent action to advance and defend our human rights.

How the fund works

The Human Rights Forward Fund will fund key priority projects which build Australia’s human rights foundations and address long-term system change, but may be difficult to get individual funding for. This includes work such as:

  • the campaign for Human Rights Acts nationally and in states and territories;
  • permanent visas for hundreds of people who survived offshore detention and have built communities in Australia for 10+ years;
  • addressing the overimprisonment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people;
  • protecting our core democratic freedoms.

The fund will also be used to strengthen our organisational base for a healthier, sustainable future.

If you would like to pledge support or be a part of accelerating and championing human rights progress, please get in touch with us at ceo@hrlc.org.au
